Spirituality and Health Connection: R-E-S-P-E-C-T

A recent post in the Io Triumphe!, the alumnae magazine of Albion College (my wife’s alma mater), highlighted an effort by 75 student athletes to promote respect despite differences among students. Some of their social media posts quoted here showed thoughtfulness and empathy:

  • We don’t say she wanted it because sexual assault is never the victim’s fault.
  • I don’t say you’re crazy because it minimizes human emotion and those affected by mental illness.
  • I don’t say retarded because there is nothing dumb or stupid about Hannah (her special needs friend).
  • We don’t say that’s so gay because the words stupid and gay are not interchangeable.

First of all, you need to accept and be proud of yourself, curves or no curves!

It’s okay to be a size 10/12. It’s okay to eat healthy and clean food on a regular basis and some cheat meals once in a while. It’s okay not to attend the gym during one week because you had too much work, too many assignments, to many worries to handle. It’s okay as long as you feel good with yourself.

If your body has the tendency to be curvy, it’s fine. You should stop being so hard on yourself and learn to love every inch that makes you as beautiful as you are. Inner confidence and a happy soul are more beautiful that an unhealthy outside.

Like so many parents today, anyone who knew me could see I was the epitome of the adage, “if you want something done, ask a busy person.” As a full-time working mom, I was devoted to ensuring my kids didn’t feel short-changed when compared to friends with homemaker moms. At the same time, I felt it essential to model an ethic of nonprofit service elbow-to-elbow with my kids.

It seemed that I was managing to cover all the bases, and I didn’t see anything that could be eliminated or simplified. There was one thing that kept nagging at me though – a dull pain in my shoulder. It took some time and thought, but I learned a lot of lessons about the mental nature of pain — and how to control it, rather than letting it control me.
