The Ananda Meditation Retreat was founded in the 1960’s by Swami Kriyananda, a close disciple of the great meditation master, Paramahansa Yogananda. They are the first home of “Ananda”, an intentional spiritual community established for the purposes of living life based on Yogananda’s teachings, following the highest spiritual principles.
A considerable time prior to Kriyananda’s purchase, Native Americans gathered on the land to practice their sacred rituals, thereby sanctifying our site as a place for deep spirituality and attunement with the Divine.
For the past 45 years, spiritual seekers from many different paths have embraced the retreat, going there for various periods of silence and seclusion as a way to connect with the Divine. The magnetic energy of the Retreat has intensified and expanded over the years, owing to the devotional quality of individuals who have graced this land. Their pure intentions and deep commitment to spiritual practices have also given rise to the profound sense of peace and stillness that pervades the site. The beauty and presence of the Divine is tangibly felt by all visitors to The Ananda Meditation Retreat.
The Ananda Meditation Retreat offers a facility open year-round that provides an optimal setting for individuals or groups coming for retreat, seclusion, educational, or special programs. Nevada City is one of the few counties in California that have all four seasons: mountain weather with a warm fall, wet spring, and occasional winter snowfall.
There are comfortable, rustic bungalows, dormitories, and deluxe cabins with accommodations for 2-5 people per unit.
There is also a large dining hall where three delicious vegetarian meals are served daily that include organic produce and eggs; homemade baked breads and locally sold favorites — Orange Almond and Cashew Date Granola. The Ananda Meditation Retreat also accommodates gluten free and vegan diets.
The Ananda Retreat is lush with ponds and sitting areas, groomed paths and universal shrines throughout beautiful gardens with plants and trees ranging from native Manzanita, Black Oak and Ponderosa Pine to a variety of flowers and botanicals including Peonies, Roses, Lavender, and Clary Sage.
As well as several miles of wilderness trails just outside the parameters of the Retreat where the old and new growth forest is home to fox, raccoon, mule deer, and black-tailed hare. For bird lovers, there are Humming Birds in route from Mexico, Western Tannengers, Orioles, and more. Some trails provide access to the south and middle forks of the Yuba River.
There is of course a beautiful domed ‘Temple of Silence’ for meditation, special programs, services and concerts.
An art room is also available for classes, group activities or independent projects.
